School Reorganisation
In March 2011 it was announced by Suffolk County Council that the School Organisation Review in the Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Stowupland and Thurston areas would be suspended due to a lack of resources. This announcement served to continue the uncertainty surrounding schools in these areas indefinitely.
At Beyton we believe it is time to end this uncertainty for the sake of the children, parents and staff. Parents we have spoken to tell us they do not want a wholesale change in educational provision in the Thurston Cluster, particularly if it is to be undertaken with insufficient funds. Parents tell us they value Beyton for:
• The excellent facilities which would be unavailable in primary schools.
• The broad and balanced curriculum which does not just focus on the Year 6 SATs.
• The opportunity for children to be taught by specialist teachers in Key Stage 2.
• The cross-curricular activities.
• Offering the Key Stage 3 children opportunities and teaching that may be unavailable in a very large high School.
• The educational standards, quality of teaching and learning, behaviour and ethos.
• For more information about the elements that make Beyton a GOOD school with OUTSTANDING attendance – a reflection of pupils' positive attitudes to their time here - please access the recent report from Ofsted - CLICK HERE
Mindful of all these factors the Governors of Beyton Middle School last night agreed to apply to leave the control of the Local Authority and seek Academy status as a 9 to 13 years middle school as soon as possible. The effect of this would be 'no change' from the current provision.
We believe that if we become an Academy it will help to secure the present pattern of education in the Thurston area, prevent the unnecessary closure of a valued school and all the upheaval for children that would necessarily follow. If at some future time sufficient resources are made available to reorganise properly and it can be shown that where reorganisation has taken place there is a sustained improvement in standards, we would be willing to enter into a dialogue with the Local Authority and the Thurston Partnership.
We will write to parents and carers again early in the Autumn term to explain more about what it means to be an Academy and give you the opportunity to have your say.
Yours sincerely
Mr A Nicholson

Internet Safety - 01/03/2011
Parental Internet Safety Guidelines
At Beyton we take precautions to limit and control access to the internet to protect children from its excesses. However, do you realize that through their computers, X boxes and mobiles at home children can potentially gain unlimited access to the internet? If you would like to know more about how you can control your child's use of their equipment please follow the following link to some very useful advice created by Steve Kirkpatrick at Willow Tree Primary School.
School Uniform - 10/02/2011
A Victory For 'Pupil Voice' at Beyton Middle School
All year 8 classes were recently asked to develop a manifesto to be put to the rest of the school as part of their work in PSHEE about democracy.
The winners were 8.4 with their manifesto pledges of
- More choice for children about the charities we support as a school
- Support for Great Ormond Street Hospital
- To be allowed to wear the 'summer' uniform of a polo shirt instead of a shirt and tie.
After negotiation with Mr Nicholson it was agreed that Beyton will continue to support big charitable events such as Red Nose Day and Children in Need with non-uniform days every half term but that we would also allow and encourage children to collect for 3 chosen charities over the course of the year. One of these charities will be Gt. Ormond Street Hospital. The other two will be negotiated by 8.4 with the rest of the school.
Mr Nicholson also agreed that for this academic year only, children may wear their polo shirts from February half term if they wish.
The light blue Beyton polo shirt with logo is available from Aubyn Davies in Bury St Edmunds
Press Release - 07/02/2011
Beyton Middle School is, ‘A very good school with some outstanding features’. That’s how Mr Haddock our School Improvement Partner (and Ofsted inspector) described Beyton after a recent visit.
On 21st January Mr Haddock spent the day talking to children about their experiences at Beyton, touring classrooms and talking to members of the senior team. He was shadowed by two of our governors, Mr Morley and Mr Roberts.
Children told him:
- They understand the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PeLTS) we are trying to encourage
- Those year 6 preparing for SATS in May feel positive about the experience
- Those children in year 7 and 8 who have been through the booster programme for SATS enjoyed it
- They know exactly what National Curriculum level they are working at in all their subjects and what they need to do to improve. Mr Haddock said he had not seen better practice which is why he rates us as OUTSTANDING
- They like the reward system and getting credit for what they do well
- They know that if they are struggling with work or in any other way they can get help. Mr Haddock feels that our system of care, guidance and support is OUTSTANDING
Mr Haddock said that all the children he spoke to were extremely positive when given the opportunity to talk about their whole experience at Beyton.
In his ‘Learning Walk’ Mr Haddock was struck by the excellent standard of teaching with the majority of children in the majority of classrooms actively involved in their own learning. He was particularly struck about the standard of pupil behaviour and the sensible way in which large numbers of children can move around the school. He saw this as an indicator of a very positive school ethos.
We now await a visit from OFSTED.
Mr Nicholson
