School Reorganisation
In March 2011 it was announced by Suffolk County Council that the School Organisation Review in the Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Stowupland and Thurston areas would be suspended due to a lack of resources. This announcement served to continue the uncertainty surrounding schools in these areas indefinitely.
At Beyton we believe it is time to end this uncertainty for the sake of the children, parents and staff. Parents we have spoken to tell us they do not want a wholesale change in educational provision in the Thurston Cluster, particularly if it is to be undertaken with insufficient funds. Parents tell us they value Beyton for:
• The excellent facilities which would be unavailable in primary schools.
• The broad and balanced curriculum which does not just focus on the Year 6 SATs.
• The opportunity for children to be taught by specialist teachers in Key Stage 2.
• The cross-curricular activities.
• Offering the Key Stage 3 children opportunities and teaching that may be unavailable in a very large high School.
• The educational standards, quality of teaching and learning, behaviour and ethos.
• For more information about the elements that make Beyton a GOOD school with OUTSTANDING attendance – a reflection of pupils' positive attitudes to their time here - please access the recent report from Ofsted - CLICK HERE
Mindful of all these factors the Governors of Beyton Middle School last night agreed to apply to leave the control of the Local Authority and seek Academy status as a 9 to 13 years middle school as soon as possible. The effect of this would be 'no change' from the current provision.
We believe that if we become an Academy it will help to secure the present pattern of education in the Thurston area, prevent the unnecessary closure of a valued school and all the upheaval for children that would necessarily follow. If at some future time sufficient resources are made available to reorganise properly and it can be shown that where reorganisation has taken place there is a sustained improvement in standards, we would be willing to enter into a dialogue with the Local Authority and the Thurston Partnership.
We will write to parents and carers again early in the Autumn term to explain more about what it means to be an Academy and give you the opportunity to have your say.
Yours sincerely
